Ännu ett tragiskt boxningsdödsfall

SvD skriver om att den koreanske boxaren Choi Yo-Sam avlidit efter en boxningsmatch, och kommentarerna till artikeln är som väntat. Några av kommentarerna:

Jag som trodde att man var tvungen att vara hjärndöd till att börja med för att bli boxare!

Alla boxare är väl mer eller mindre hjärndöda om inte förr så senare.

Att mosa hjärnor är den finaste sport som finns.

Wikipedia har en lista över dödsfall i samband med boxning, och tittar man igenom listan över de sammanlagt 23 dödsfallen (första dödsfallet 1830) så kan man bland annat läsa:

Griffith hit Paret twenty-nine times in a row, and eighteen times in six seconds, when Paret was lying against the ropes. Referee Ruby Goldstein came under criticism for not stopping the fight sooner.

The official cause of death was given as head trauma causing bleeding in Payne's brain. It was subsequently reported that he may have been complaining of headaches to people close to him prior to the Maraldo bout; Payne, however, did not tell the commission doctor of any problems, and so the bout continued as scheduled.

Although he lived in Las Vegas, commissioner Marc Ratner, considered one of the most serious and respected figures in boxing, felt Rone was in risk of getting injured every time he boxed, so he denied the Ohio native a license in 2000. Rone then took to the road to find fights, going as far as Germany and Denmark.

The fight would be his last. Sanders, who had complained previously of headaches and shoulder cramping, was uncharacteristically listless in the opinion of some observers.

The controversy over the match arose from the fact that Sisnorio's role in the fight was not officially sanctioned by the Philippine Games and Amusement Board.

Det är alltså ofta yttre händelser som orsakar såpass allvarliga skador.

Samtidigt som det naturligtvis inte är någon hälsokur att mota slag med skallen så är det även förknippat med en åtta gånger förhöjd dödlighet (dessutom oaktat det oerhört sneda urvalet, vad det verkar) att åka Vasaloppet, och det har faktiskt dött fler i Vasaloppsspåren än i boxningsrelaterade händelser mellan 1970 och 2005 (13 mot 10, sett till Wikipedias siffror).

Sammanfattningsvis är inte boxning ofarligt, men det är heller inte särskilt farligt, och förbudsivrarna har egentligen bara moralargument att luta sig mot.
