The report set out to find out which of seven types of bags have the lowest environmental impact by assessing pollution caused by extraction of raw materials, production, transportation and disposal.

It found that an HDPE plastic bag would have a baseline global warming potential of 1.57 kg Co2 equivalent, falling to 1.4 kg Co2e if re-used once, the same as a paper bag used four times (1.38 kg Co2e).

A cotton bag would have to be re-used 171 times to emit a similar level, 1.57 kg Co2e.

The researchers concluded: “The HDPE bag had the lowest environmental impacts of the single use options in nine of the 10 impact categories. The bag performed well because it was the lightest single use bag considered.”

Coal mine accidents in China killed 2,433 miners last year, 7.5 percent less than one year earlier, State Administration of Work Safety spokesman Huang Yi said on Friday.

Further, the number of work-related fatalities in China last year totaled 79,552, a 37.4 percent decline from 2005, Huang told a press conference.

Peter: Good morning, subjects. What's for breakfast?
Meg: Nothing, you idiot. We don't have any food.
Lois: Peter, this has gotten way out of hand. Look at what we're reduced to! Our own baby has to use newspapers for diapers!

Lois: This is insanity!
Peter: Whoa, where do you think you're going?
Lois: America! I've had enough. You can keep this filthy mess you call a country! Come on, kids.

Saddam Hussein: And then Jerry guessed that her name was "Mulva."
Muammar Qadhdhafi: That show is so funny. It really reminds me of me and my friends. How we hang out before I kill them for worshipping the wrong god.

Etanolgeografi

In Greece earlier this month, Al Gore made a startling admission: "First-generation ethanol, I think, was a mistake." Unfortunately, Americans have Gore to thank for ethanol subsidies. In 1994, then-Vice President Al Gore ended a 50-50 tie in the Senate by voting in favor of an ethanol tax credit that added almost $5 billion to the federal deficit last year. And that number doesn't factor the many ways in which corn-based ethanol mandates drive up the price of food and livestock feed.

Sure, he meant well, but as Reuters reported, Gore also said, "One of the reasons I made that mistake is that I paid particular attention to the farmers in my home state of Tennessee and I had a certain fondness for the farmers in the state of Iowa because I was about to run for president."

Ett vetenskapssvep

Först tre exempel på god forskning:

- Polar Bears Can't Eat Geese Into Extinction

In a new study published in an early online edition of Oikos, researchers affiliated with the Museum show that even large numbers of hungry bears repeatedly raiding nests over many years would have a difficult time eliminating all of the geese because of a mismatch in the timing of bear arrival on shore and goose egg incubation.

- Scientists build world's first anti-laser

More than 50 years after the invention of the laser, scientists at Yale University have built the world's first anti-laser, in which incoming beams of light interfere with one another in such a way as to perfectly cancel each other out.

- Prehistoric bird used club-like wings as weapon

Long before the knights of medieval Europe wielded flails or martial artists brandished nunchucks, it appears that a flightless prehistoric bird used its own wings as a similar type of weapon in combat.

- Beer Batter is Better - How it makes a great fish'n'chips

Beer makes such a great base for batter because it simultaneously adds three ingredients—carbon dioxide, foaming agents and alcohol—each of which brings to bear different aspects of physics and chemistry to make the crust light and crisp.

- Secondhand television exposure linked to eating disorders

For parents wanting to reduce the negative influence of TV on their children, the first step is normally to switch off the television set.

But a new study suggests that might not be enough. It turns out indirect media exposure, i.e., having friends who watch a lot of TV, might be even more damaging to a teenager's body image.

- How much smoking is safe? The answer appears to be none

Smokers often wonder if smoking less might be safer for their health. The answer appears to be no. Occasional smoking, and even second-hand smoke, create biological changes that may increase the risks of lung disease and cancer, according to a new study.

Everyone must have heard about the Large Hadron Collider built in Switzerland. But few people know that the world-famous collider Soviet scientists had started constructing 20 years before in a small village near Moscow. That time it was the largest particle accelerator. Let’s visit today almost deserted site of the suspended largest particle accelerator to be.

She’ll stop a running horse, she’ll enter a burning hut

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — A woman in a jungle region of northern Malaysia rescued her husband from a tiger attack by clubbing the beast on its head with a large wooden soup ladle and chasing it away, police said Monday.

A government is an organization set up for the purpose of obtaining hookers and blow for the leaders.

Något oväntat verkar även Storbritanniens biträdande premiärminister Nick Clegg dela den åsikten så ordagrant som gemene nyhetsmedia tillåter - citat ur The Guardian, via The UK Libertarian:

The natural inclination of government is to hoard power and information; to accrue power to itself in the name of the public good.

The story, by reporter Daniel Burdon, said ”more than 30,000 pigs were floating down the Dawson River”.

What Baralaba piggery owner Sid Everingham actually said was ”30 sows and pigs” not ”30,000 pigs”.

Correction:
This blog post originally stated that one in three black men who have sex with me is HIV positive. In fact, the statistic applies to black men who have sex with men.

Milton Friedman:

There are four ways in which you can spend money. You can spend your own money on yourself. When you do that, why then you really watch out what you’re doing, and you try to get the most for your money.

Then you can spend your own money on somebody else. For example, I buy a birthday present for someone. Well, then I’m not so careful about the content of the present, but I’m very careful about the cost.

Then, I can spend somebody else’s money on myself. And if I spend somebody else’s money on myself, then I’m sure going to have a good lunch!

Finally, I can spend somebody else’s money on somebody else. And if I spend somebody else’s money on somebody else, I’m not concerned about how much it is, and I’m not concerned about what I get. And that’s government. And that’s close to 40% of our national income.

Klaus: Yes, you got $14,99 refunded back to Greg and Terry's credit card.
Steve: I forgot we used their card. Who cares about Greg and Terry's money?

Selling unpasteurised milk and cheese for human consumption is illegal, but it is available to buy under names like ''bath milk'' in certain health-food shops and markets.

Och från Treehugger:

Though the milk has been labeled Cleopatra's enzymatic body lotion while raw cream alone is called massage cream, authorities claim that their purpose is for human consumption.

Goods for nothing

We gotta install microwave ovens
Custom kitchen deliveries
We gotta move these refrigerators
We gotta move these color TV's

Vidare på just färg-tv-spåret - fantastiske Warren Meyer:

The reason I bring this us is because I have always thought the way black and white TV was transitioned to color was particularly clever. They could have broadcast color with three signals of Red, Green, and Blue levels, and then black and white TVs would have to be thrown out – they wouldn’t show anything meaningful with that signal. Instead, though, they mapped color with a three part system of an absolute brightness signal for each pixel, plus two color signals. If you are familiar with Photoshop, when you choose a color, you can enter the color as three numbers R-G-B for the intensity of each color or as Hue-Saturation-Brightness. While not the same as the TV system, it is similar in that it has a pixel brightness component, plus to color components. (my memory is that in the TV system, it is brightness plus two colors and the third color — blue, I think — is arrived at by subtraction from the total brightness minus the two other colors.)

Here is the trick – the signal which was just the pixel brightness component is essentially identical to the old black and white TV signal — after all, a black and white signal is just the relative brightness of each pixel. So they took a black and white signal and then added bandwidth so that there was more information if one had a color set. Both technologies, old and new, worked from the same signal.

Gissa ordet

Ur Aftonbladet:
