The first thing you have to learn is to suppress the gag reflex in the back of your throat. No easy feat - but that is just the start of the sword's long and hazardous journey. Next you have to flip your epiglottis [struplock] out of the way with the tip of the sword, negotiate the tricky junction where the pharynx [svalget] divides into the oesophagus [matstrupe] (right) and trachea [luftstrupe] (wrong), wriggle through a ring of muscle just below the pharynx [svalget] called the upper oesophageal sphincter [övre magmunnen], gently nudge your heart out of the way (the heart nestles right next to the oesophagus [matstrupe] wall, and according to Meyer it really hurts if you poke it with a sword), negotiate the kink in your lower oesophagus [nedre magmunnen] where it enters the stomach, relax the sphincter [magmunnen] muscle, then, finally, suppress the stomach's retch reflex. All while remembering not to cut yourself.
