Ford Motor Company plunged to a full-year loss of $14.6 billion (£10.2 billion) for 2008 — the worst annual performance in its 105-year history — but the second-biggest American carmaker insisted that it did not need a government bailout.
William Clay Ford Jr, the company chairman, insisted this month that the carmaker would not take taxypayers' cash "unless the world implodes".
