Närproducerat i praktiken, redux

Jag skrev tidigare om 100 mile suit-projektet, där en kostym tillverkades med allt vad 100 miles omkrets hade att erbjuda.

Det finns dock en annan sida av närproducerat, som bland annat berörts finstämt av Göran Persson: "Folk kan städa efter sig själva, det tycker jag gott." Att han vid det tillfället hade fem timmar betald städning per vecka och senare fick cirka 13 000 kronor i avdrag för hushållsnära tjänster är blott en parentes i sammanhanget.

Och enligt närproduceratlogik har han en självklar poäng - är det positivt att hålla jobben i närheten borde det vara optimalt att hålla jobben till sig själv. Thomas Thwaites har beslutat att testa teorin och har gett sig i kast med att tillverka en brödrost alldeles på egen hand (jag står dock en smula frågande inför projektets avgränsningar):

I'm Thomas Thwaites and I'm trying to build a toaster, from scratch - beginning by mining the raw materials and ending with a product that Argos sells for only £3.99. A toaster. How hard can it be?

Thwaites har dock upptäckt vissa bekymmer:

Well, quite hard. After some research I have discovered that I will need the following materials to make a toaster. Copper, to make the pins of the electric plug, the cord, and internal wires. Iron to make the steel grilling apparatus, and the spring to pop up the toast. Nickel to make the heating element. Mica (a mineral a bit like slate) around which the heating element is wound, and of course plastic for the plug and cord insulation, and for the all important sleek looking casing. The first four of these materials are dug out of the ground, and plastic is derived from oil, which is generally sucked up through a hole.

Men till skillnad från 100 mile suit-projektet är han åtminstone inte bunden geografiskt:

Part of the project consists of going to the places where it's possible to dig up these raw materials. Mining no longer happens in the UK, but the country is dotted with abandoned mines, some having been worked since before the 'UK' existed, but all currently uneconomical. We shot some footage at Clearwell Iron mine in South Wales before Christmas.

The only known deposit of Nickel in the UK has long since been exhausted. In Finland however exploitation of a huge deposit has begun. I'd very much like to go and bring back a lump of nickel ore from this remote industrial area, and make it in to an element for my toaster. I'm also trying to negotiate a helicopter ride to an oil rig in the North Sea to collect some oil from which I would try (and certainly fail) to make plastic.

Thwaites skulle i nuläget behöva hjälp främst med följande delar:

# Access to an oil rig.
# Information about any nickel mines in the UK.
# A contact at Talvivaara Mining Company Plc.
# Information about how to reach the Knoydart mica mine in Scotland.
