Och precis som Johan Hedin skriver så ser man att det tidigare fanns ett tydligt samband mellan ökad tillväxt och ökat miljöslitage, men att sambandet helt har upphört de senaste decennierna.
Ur rapporten:
"Because electricity generation and irrigation together accounted for a massive 80 percent of our water use in 2005, the improvements in efficiency and technology give us hope for the future," Castle said.
Och vidare angående jordbruket, för att anknyta till tidigare inlägg kring teknisk utveckling inom jordbruket - ur rapporten:
The total number of acres irrigated continued to increase from 1950 to 2000, even as withdrawals remained static or decreased. In 2005, the total number of acres irrigated was 2 percent less than in 2000, but still more than 60 million acres. Between 1985 and 2005, the number of acres irrigated by sprinkler systems steadily increased from 22 million to more than 30 million acres. [...]The average application rate for irrigation water has declined steadily from 3.55 acre-feet per acre in 1950 to 2.35 acre-feet per acre in 2005. This decline is attributed to greater use of sprinkler systems rather than flood systems and corresponding decreases in conveyance losses due to the more efficient application of water.
