Incentives matter

Flerarbetande amerikaner

Såg att Johan Norberg argumenterade om amerikaner med fler än en inkomstkälla, angående hans tidigare artikel på temat, och letade upp uppdaterad statistik - från U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics Multiple jobholding during the 2000s (pdf):

The incidence of multiple jobholding generally increases as workers achieve higher levels of education. (See table 2 and chart 3.) Among workers age 25 and older, those with less than a high school diploma had a low multiple jobholding rate (2.4 percent). The rate was much higher (7.0 percent) for workers with an advanced degree, especially those with a master's degree or a doctoral degree.

Cracked förklarar marknadsekonomi - och alternativet

Ur artikeln 5 Ridiculous Myths Everyone Believes About the Wild West, angående myten om ständiga konfrontationer mellan nybyggare och ursprungsbefolkning (länkar till källor angående siffrorna finns i artikeln):

Of the hundreds of thousands of pioneers who willingly trudged all the way through Nebraska, only a few hundred died in clashes with Native Americans.
/../
During this same period, settlers killed over 400 Native Americans. Again, that's not zero, but it does mean that the vast majority of settlers never got into a murderous conflict with hostile tribes. It was far more likely that the average settler would trade with Native Americans or hire members of various tribes as guides, rather than fight them. It wasn't necessarily because they were open-minded and peace loving that they abstained from violence, but rather that it's never good business to kill your customers, or vice versa. Especially when you're talking about someone providing a potentially life-saving service (a guide kept you from getting lost, when getting lost meant getting dead).

Native American deaths caused by the U.S. government and the military likely number in the millions.

Statens russinfingrar

Ur The New Yorker, via Boing Boing, angående en bombskadad saudier:

A twenty-year-old man who had been watching the Boston Marathon had his body torn into by the force of a bomb. He wasn’t alone; a hundred and seventy-six people were injured and three were killed. But he was the only one who, while in the hospital being treated for his wounds, had his apartment searched in “a startling show of force,” as his fellow-tenants described it to the Boston Herald, with a “phalanx” of officers and agents and two K9 units.

According to our calculations, explained in this policy brief, the total cost to American consumers from higher prices resulting from safeguard tariffs on Chinese tires was around $1.1 billion in 2011. The cost per job saved (a maximum of 1,200 jobs by our calculations) was at least $900,000 in that year. Only a very small fraction of this bloated figure reached the pockets of tire workers. Instead, most of the money landed in the coffers of tire companies, mainly abroad but also at home.

- Från The Independent, via Freakonomics:

A law banning horses from Romanian roads may be responsible for the surge in the fraudulent sale of horsemeat on the European beef market, a French politician said yesterday.

- Från BBC:

An EU decision to reclassify a type of minced meat widely used in the UK played a significant part in creating the horsemeat crisis, a former Food Standards Agency senior scientist says.
